How to Maintain Your Home Windows
Most of us have a cleaning routine for our homes, whether that’s vacuuming once a week or doing a monthly deep clean of the kitchen. However, we all lead busy lives and it can be difficult to stay on top of cleaning when you’re juggling work, children and your social life. Our windows are one area which can be overlooked, but window maintenance is important if you want to keep your home in good condition.
Failure to maintain your windows can lead to expensive repairs or replacement and an increase in energy consumption, so see below for our top tips to keep your windows well maintained.
Regular cleaning
Your windows are constantly exposed to the elements, including rain, pollution and dirt. Aim to clean window panes every three months, both inside and out, or prioritise the outside if you’re short on time. You don’t need any fancy equipment, a damp soft cloth and warm soapy water will do the job! Washing up liquid is highly effective for removing grease stains; simply wipe, then rinse with clean cold water. Read this blog for more window cleaning tips!
Don’t forget the seals
Don’t forget the rubber seals of your windows - they can become a breeding spot for mould if they’re not maintained. Use a mould spray to remove any existing mould from the seals and leave windows open where possible to increase ventilation. This is particularly important in damp rooms like the kitchen or bathroom.
Maintain locks and hinges
Locks and hinges can become stiff over time so lubricate them regularly using a light machine oil. This only applies to metal locks and hinges; plastic moving parts are self lubricated so it’s best to leave them be.
Regular inspections
Prevention is better than cure, so regularly inspect your windows for signs of leaks, cracks in the seals or cracks in the glass panes. You should also look for any gaps between the window and the wall, as this can lead to damp. Inspect locks and hinges and regularly open and close windows so they don’t become too stiff.
