Add a Warm Roof to Make Your Conservatory Useful Year-Round

Grassmoor Glass • August 11, 2021
Warm roof

If you have an older conservatory, you know how chilled they can get during the winter months and how hot during the summer. It can make your conservatory all but unusable throughout parts of the year. If this is something that frustrates you, it’s time to look at adding a warm roof to your conservatory.

What is a Warm Roof?

A warm roof system is a simple rooftop that is built over the existing frame of the conservatory and helps keep the air inside the conservatory warm. While glass tends to let the heat escape, particularly when it is on the roof, this does not. It is considered a breathable roof, as it has a membrane that is weatherproof and an insulation layer to prevent the heat from escaping.

The entire thing can be set up on top of window frames or existing rafters, so it’s ideal for installing over a conservatory. This is thanks to the counter battens which lay across the rafters and provide additional support without creating another structural element.

If you find it too cold to enjoy your conservatory in the winter, consider adding a warm roof. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well it works.

Keeping the Light

Of course, one of the main reasons people choose to install a conservatory is for the beautiful natural light. You may not want to lose some of that by installing a roof, though there will still be plenty of light coming through the many windows in the conservatory.

To combat this issue, you can install vents in the warm roof. This will give you a chance to experience some light coming in from above, while still retaining the beautiful daylight. If you can, set the vents on the south side of the building so it can get as much light as possible.

Since heat rises, you will notice that in winter, you spend a lot of energy trying to heat older glass-roofed rooms. With the warm roof addition, you can keep your beautiful conservatory and enjoy it with heat included. It’s the best of both worlds and allows you to use the space throughout the entire year.

Are you interested in extending the use of your conservatory into winter? If so, we have what you need and can install a warm roof before the cold weather sets in. Contact Grassmoor Glass today.
