When to call your local glaziers for maintenance and repair

Grassmoor Glass • June 28, 2019

There are some features of the home that we simply couldn’tlive without, and doors and windows are certainly included on this list. Afterall, doors and windows are two of the most functional features in any building, and without them, we wouldn’t be able to ventilate our homes, enjoy somemuch-needed privacy, or keep ourselves and our possessions safe fromopportunists.

Unfortunately, however, doors and windows can sustain damageover time, especially as they’re used so frequently. When this does happen, you’ll need to get them repaired, replaced or maintained by a professional asquickly as possible to make sure you can continue enjoying the benefits ofsound windows and doors. Nobody wants to sleep in a house with a front doorthat doesn’t close properly or struggle through a particularly cold winter withwindows that haven’t been double glazed.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a guide to identifyingwhen your windows and doors are in need of repair or maintenance work, and whenyou know it’s time to call your local glaziers for assistance.

When you know it’stime for replacement windows

Here are some of the most common signs that your householdwindows need repairing or replacing:

Scratched or chippedwindow panes

Although scratches and chips may at first appear to be nomore than cosmetic damage, these seemingly insignificant inconsistencies candevelop into more serious problems over time. Whether it’s a small scratch inthe corner of your window or a small chip from a piece of kicked up gravel, making sure you keep an eye on any kind of damage to your window pane isimportant to preventing issues from exacerbating.

After all, these ‘minor’ issues may make your windows muchmore vulnerable than they should be, and could even lead to them smashing orcracking far easier than they would have done had they not been weakenedpreviously. To make sure you prevent problems which are more significant (andtherefore more expensive to resolve) from developing, contact your localglaziers for advice.

Smashed or crackedwindow panes

If you haven’t updated your window panes from single todouble glazed, they may be vulnerable to smashing and cracking. It may onlytake a stray football from your neighbour’s garden to cause irreversibledamage, leaving you with a crack in your bedroom, kitchen or living roomwindow. This is something you’ll want to avoid for a myriad of reasons, including the fact that it’ll become much more difficult to keep your home safefrom the outside world and warm during the colder months.

For this reason, smashed and cracked window glass needs to berepaired as quickly as possible. It’s also a good idea to take this opportunityto upgrade your window panes from single to double or even triple glazed, asthis will help you to prevent weaknesses from developing again. There are alsomany other benefits to having double glazed windows installed, such asincreasing the energy efficiency of each room and heightening your securitymeasures, so this is certainly something to discuss with your window repairspecialists.

Leaking windows

Pools of water have no place in the house, especially whenrainwater collects on your brand new carpet or makes your floorboards slippery. This is not only frustrating but could also lead to problems with damp andmildew in the home. If you’ve begun to notice puddles of water collecting underone of your windows, it’s likely that there’s a leak somewhere that needs to befixed. Again, this is something you’ll need to get sorted as soon as possible.

Fortunately, your glaziers may be able to repair a leakingwindow pane without replacing the whole thing. This depends on whether it’s aproblem with the glass or the frame, and also depends on the severity of theissue.

Condensation betweenwindow panes

A build-up of condensation between the layers of your windowpanes is a sign that there’s moisture where there shouldn’t be. This is likelybecause the seals have deteriorated or broken, allowing moisture to build upbetween each layer and steam up. When this happens, it stops your windows fromkeeping your home well insulated, which is one of the main reasons why peopleopt for double or triple glazed windows in the first place.

It may seem tempting to ignore the situation at hand andsimply hope the condensation will dry out over time. However, once moisture hasfound its way between the panes, any trapped air will escape. This trapped airis what gives the windows their insulating qualities, and is thereforeessential if you want to keep enjoying the benefits of double glazing.

When you know it’stime for replacement doors

Here are some of the most common signs that it’s time to callyour local glazing specialists for door repair or replacement services:

Your doors aren’t opening or closing properly

If you can’t open or close your door properly, it may be timefor repair or replacement services. After all, this is the bare minimum youshould be able to expect from a door - especially your front or back door. These are supposed to allow and limit access to your property when it’s needed,so a door that doesn’t close properly could make your property vulnerable tocriminals or put you and your loved ones at risk in the event of a fire.

There are a number of reasons why your doors might notopening or closing properly, but it’s likely to be as a result of misalignment.A door that’s misaligned won’t shut all the way because, quite simply, thedoor’s latch won’t align with the frame, and will likely bounce back when youtry to close it. To fix this, your local door specialists will likely need totighten the door’s hinges - something that sounds fairly simple but shouldcertainly be left to the experts.

The door handles arebroken

Broken door handles can cause a variety of different problemsand are extremely inconvenient. While you’ll still be able to close your doorwith ease, opening it again will likely be difficult without a functioninghandle. Attempting to replace your door handles may end up damaging your doorfurther, so make sure you leave this to your glaziers. You don’t want to causeproblems with the locking mechanism in the door, as this will only lead tofurther frustrations and more complicated repairs.

Damaged door panes

If your doors are fitted with glass panels, they’ll also bevulnerable to the same issues as windows. If they aren’t maintained properly, they may shatter or develop cracks which could lead to more significant issuesin the long term. If your door panes have become weak, it may only take someoneslamming the door before they smash or split.

If you’ve noticed dents, scratches or chips in your door’swindow panes, it’s important to contact your local glaziers as soon aspossible. They’ll be able to make the necessary repairs to the panes withoutcausing further damage to the door itself, and will also be able to offermaintenance tips for keeping your doors and windows in top condition for yearsto come.
