When Is It Time to Replace Double Glazed Windows?

Grassmoor Glass • November 24, 2020
Double glazed windows

Double-glazed windows are known for their durability; in fact, it’s their sturdy design that makes them so secure and energy-efficient. With the right care and maintenance, professionally-installed double-glazed windows can even last for up to 20 years. This makes them a truly worthwhile investment for any home or building! However, nothing lasts forever - not even double-glazed windows. After a while, they will need to be replaced with newer panes to ensure they provide adequate protection - but how do you know when it’s time to replace them?

It’s time to replace your double-glazed windows if:

You can no longer open and close your windows

This is one of the most obvious signs that it’s time to replace your windows. Stuck windows aren’t just frustrating; they could also be dangerous. Not being able to shut your windows could leave your home vulnerable to theft and not being able to open them could make it difficult to exit your home in an emergency, such as a fire. Once you’ve noticed that it’s difficult to open and close your windows, it’s time for a replacement.

You’ve spotted condensation between the window panes

Spotting condensation on the inside or outside of your windows can be frustrating, but it will typically disappear once you have wiped it down and the humidity levels in your home have subsided. However, if condensation has built up between the window panes, you will likely need new windows. Condensation develops between window panes when moisture penetrates a broken air seal, so there isn’t much you can do to prevent or repair this. Once the air seal has become damaged, it is time for new double-glazed windows.

You’ve noticed cracks in the glass

There are some types of cosmetic damage that you can ignore, such as scuffs on the window frame. However, some types of cosmetic damage must be dealt with straight away. This includes chipped and cracked glass. Luckily, double-glazed windows are strong enough to resist most types of damage, but cracks aren’t unheard of. If you’ve spotted cracks and chips, you will need to have your windows replaced; otherwise, you’ll have draughts and water leaks to deal with. Damaged windows will also leave your home vulnerable to break-ins, so it’s best to replace them with a new, sturdy set.

Your energy bills are skyrocketing

One of the greatest benefits of double-glazed windows is their energy efficiency. Glaziers design and build double-glazed panes to stop heat entering and escaping properties and to keep them a comfortable temperature all year round. As a result, installing double-glazed windows can also help you reduce your energy bills. So, if you’re no longer benefiting from reduced energy consumption - and your bills are skyrocketing - it’s a sign that something’s wrong.
