What is the Difference Between Cold and Warm Roofs?

Grassmoor Glass • March 3, 2022
Warm roof

When deciding on what insulation you would like for your roof, you need to determine whether you would like a cold or warm roof. It can be difficult distinguishing the differences between the two and whether they would benefit your home. If you’re looking at injecting a new lease of life into your small conservatory, extension or new build, you’ll need to consider which style of insulation would best suit you.

Read on to find out the differences between the cold and warm roofs and how Grassmoor Glass might be able to help.

Cold Roofs

This type of roof sees the insulation placed between floor joists, allowing for almost no loss in height. This roof is known for being less efficient than its warmer counterpart, which is mainly down to the fact that the rafters remain uninsulated. On colder days, rafters conduct and transfer some of the cold into the rooms below. This overall contributes to a lower temperature throughout the house.

Warm Roofs

Whilst cold roofs have insulation in between the floor joists, warm roofs have insulation attached to floor decking and the rafters. These types of roofs are effective because they offer the most amount of thermal protection. Being both efficient and cost-effective, warm roofs are known to be the best insulation that contributes positively to the environment too. Having insulation on the roof structure means that the risk of thermal bridging is completely reduced.

Warm roofs can be particularly useful in conservatories. For instance, older conservatories that might be struggling to maintain heat can now be restored to its former glory through the addition of a warm roof. The recent technology surrounding warm roofs is the introduction of LEKA Living, whereby these warm roofs can be installed so that you can enjoy your conservatory regardless of how cold it is outside. Staying nice and cool in the summer but warm and toasty in the winter, LEKA Warm Roofs offer exceptional thermal qualities making you not want to leave your conservatory!

If you believe that a warm roof conservatory would be a perfect addition to your home, then Grassmoor Grass are here to make this possible. As well as supplying and installing warm roof systems to conservatories in the Chesterfield area, we also have the capabilities to provide repairs and maintenance for your windows, doors, locks and more.
