How To Save On Your Energy Bill In The Summer

While a lot of talk goes into how to save on your bills during the winter, not as much thought is put into saving money during the summer. But there's no reason we shouldn’t be trying to use energy efficiently all year round.

Here are some tips to save energy during the summer.

Switch Off Appliances

Just like in winter, you should try to switch off your appliances when they’re not in use, as they can use energy without actually being in use. Try to make use of the nice weather instead of some appliances. You definitely won’t need to run a tumble dryer when the sun rays can dry your clothes in no time at all.

Turn Lights Off

In the winter you’re more likely to keep lights on in the daytime as it is generally darker, but in the summer you should make the most of natural light and only switch lights on when necessary. You can also make the switch to LED light bulbs that are longer lasting and more energy efficient.

Fan Use

Fans are a great way to keep cool, but they do make a significant dent in your energy bill. Consider solar power or rechargeable options to reduce the amount of energy used. You should also try placing them at floor level so they circulate the cooler air that is closer to the floor instead of the warmer air higher up.

Water Usage

During the summer, you’ll have less need for hot water. You can choose to lower your water temperature in general or have shorter showers to help reduce your water bill. Try washing your clothes at a lower temperature, simple changes like this can make a big difference.

Windows

Energy Efficient windows can help you to save money and keep your home cool. They will reflect the heat back to the sun, meaning you’ll have to spend less energy trying to cool down the interior of your home. If you do run fans or air conditioners to keep your home cool, having insulated windows can help to keep the air-conditioned air circulating inside, rather than allowing it to leave and needing to run these devices more powerfully to compensate, costing more money.
