How to Make a Property More Eco-Friendly

Whether you are building a property or renovating an existing one, it’s sensible to think about its environmental impact. Making changes to the infrastructure of a building can protect it from heat loss and reduce carbon emissions. It can also save you significant sums of money year on year.

Replace Roof

It’s estimated that one-quarter of the energy you generate in your home is lost through the roof - that’s quite significant and expensive. As energy prices continue to rise, it makes more financial and ecological sense to install a warm roof that saves more of the heat and reduces expenses.

A warm roof differs from a cold roof in the way it is insulated. Unlike a cold roof that has insulation of the ceiling of the roof interior, a warm roof has insulation at the level of the rafters. This means that more warm air is trapped in the loft area, keeping the home warmer overall.

Replace Doors

Typically, around 35% of energy in the home is lost through the walls and doors, but this is greater if you have glass in the doors. Of course, glass is decorative and can be safe if it is double or triple-glazed, but why take the risk and increase your home’s energy costs as well?

If you want to make your home more eco-friendly this year, then swap out the doors that have glass in them and replace them with solid wood doors. Solid wood doors are harder to break into and reduce the amount of energy lost through the doors making your home sustainable.

Upgrade Windows

Again, 35% of energy is lost through windows and doors combined, but one of the biggest culprits is the windows. We all need windows in our homes to allow natural light in and during the day, but they can be made more eco-friendly by installing double or triple glazing.

There’s good news, installing double or triple glazing is very easy, and it is also becoming less expensive. Double and triple-glazed windows trap air between the layers of glass, creating a cushion that prevents the home from losing heat. Also, hang heavy curtains during the winter.

Better Insulation

When it comes to insulating your home and reducing your energy costs, there are many options. By far, insulation is one of the best ways you can increase your energy efficiency and make your home more eco-friendly, so make sure you choose carefully when you select your insulation.

Choose from insulation boards, insulation slabs, multifoil insulation, and more. However, the best eco-friendly insulation is the spray foam kind. Spray foam insulation is not only excellent at trapping the air, but it is also perfect for getting into the spaces the other insulation can’t reach.

Final Thoughts

These days, it’s important to make your home eco-friendly, whether you are building a new property or renovating an existing one. Making your home eco-friendly helps the net zero targets, but it also reduces your energy consumption and helps to save money annually.
