How Secure Are Your Windows?
Security is a big concern for many people and keeping your home safe should be a priority. One of the most common ways for burglars to enter your home is through a window. In most cases, they don’t even need to break the window, they simply open it.
How secure are your windows? That depends. You should examine your current windows and check the locks on them. Are they easy to move if you jiggle the window a little? If so, they need to be replaced immediately.
Types of Window Locks
Window locks vary according to the type of window, but here are some of the most common options:
Keyed: These require a key to lock and unlock. While they are the most secure, they’re also difficult if you lose the key. It can be annoying to constantly find the key in order to open the locked window for a breeze.
Latches: These are usually used on non-UPVC windows of all sorts. They use leavers and catches and are generally set up on the top of the window sash. These can provide a little extra security, but they are definitely not the most secure, so should be used as a backup.
Limited: Blocks that prevent windows from opening enough to let a child squeeze out or a pet escape are useful for these scenarios. However, they should not be considered security locks by any means.
Levers: Considered to be universal, these handles may be cranked in either direction to lock and unlock the window. They’re easy to use, but if there is a gap, a burglar can easily flip the handle.
Press lock: With the press of a button, you can lock this type of window, but you will only be able to open it with a key.
Remember to ensure that windows on all levels of the house are secured, as a burglar can easily scale the home to get into a second level window. Be alert and protect your home.
